For a couple of days now, Ottawa’s news outlets are searching for the name of a country that owes more than $175 000 in municipal taxes for a building that it owns. The City is doing its best to recover the money, but refuses to say who the culprit is.
The documents obtained by Embassy Newspaper under the Access to Information Act tell us that the country has refused to pay for many years now. Unfortunately, the name is blacked out, leaving us few clues as to who might be the mysterious country. Here’s what we know:
- The country’s name is about 7 letters long (or 6 if the first letter is larger than most).
- The building on which this debt is due used to be the country’s embassy because it was exempted for paying the taxes for many years. Now that the building no longer houses the embassy, but remain the property of that government, it must pay its taxes.
- According to the city of Ottawa documents, that state has a «Ministry of Foreign Affairs» as opposed to a «Ministry of External Affairs», etc.
